Effective Dental Care Methods: A Guide to Achieving a Proper Daily Teeth Cleaning Routine
A bright, white smile can be achieved through proper oral hygiene, with the foundation being thorough tooth brushing and cleaning.
Why Is Emphasis on Proper Oral Hygiene Important?
- Plaque removal: Brushing and using dental floss help remove bacterial buildup on the tooth surfaces. Failure to remove plaque can lead to tartar and tooth decay.
- Prevention of tooth decay: Maintaining proper oral hygiene allows us to remove bacteria and food residues, reducing the risk of tooth decay.
- Fresh breath: Removing bacteria results in a lasting feeling of fresh breath.
What Tools Should Be Used for Tooth Brushing and Cleaning?
- Toothbrush:
-
- Electric toothbrush: Nowadays, there is a wide variety of electric toothbrushes available in stores. However, the most important feature to consider is pressure control. This function helps prevent applying excessive pressure on the teeth, reducing the risk of gum recession.
- Manual toothbrush: Choosing a normal toothbrush with medium bristles is recommended for easy plaque removal. If you have recently undergone oral surgery, it's advisable to clean the surgical area with a soft-bristle toothbrush.
- Toothpaste: Opt for fluoride-containing toothpaste, which aids in enamel remineralization, potentially reversing early cavities.
- Dental floss: Its use is recommended for cleaning between teeth, with special attention to preserving gum health.
- Mouthwash: Incorporating mouthwash into your daily routine is advisable.
How to Properly Clean Your Teeth?
The daily 2x2 minutes doesn't sound like much, does it? Yet, these 4 minutes, if used wisely, can greatly improve our overall health.
- Toothbrush:
-
- Electric toothbrush: During the 2-minute brushing, it's essential to build a systematic approach, ensuring that we thoroughly clean all surfaces of our teeth. When using an electric toothbrush, there's no need to move the brush back and forth; it's better to simply touch it to the tooth surface and, after 3 seconds, move on to the next section.
- Manual toothbrush: Avoid the back-and-forth scrubbing technique, which is often applied incorrectly and can cause gum recession. Instead, use a toothbrush with bristles tilted at a 45-degree angle and employ sweeping or circular motions to clean the tooth surfaces.
- Mouthwash: I recommend using mouthwash once a day, but not immediately after brushing, as the molecules in toothpaste may inhibit enamel remineralization. It's best to wait at least 20 minutes between brushing and using mouthwash.
- Dental floss: To use dental floss, stretch it between your two fingers and insert it between your teeth, taking care to preserve the integrity of the triangular gum area. In a C-shaped motion, guide the floss along the surface of one tooth and then the other.
How Often Should You Visit Professional Dental Cleaning?
In addition to home dental care, it's advisable to undergo professional dental cleaning every six months. Dental cleaning in a dental office is performed by dentists or dental hygienists. During this process, tartar is removed, and a polishing procedure is applied, which reduces the risk of plaque formation. Regular check-ups also help prevent serious dental problems.
